"Apprehension" by Sandy Feinstein, from Unbounded
Snow is forecast to fall in forty-five minutes with a thirty-five percent probability. The air smells the likelihood. A solid wall of white cloud-cover mimics what could fall, has fallen elsewhere, north and west. Hardy evergreen and ambitious bald deciduous trees above them pierce sky, push at its pretensions. They are undaunted, their roots safe below ground should their limbs and needles be sandwiched between accumulating drifts. Dead leaves skitter past, easily mistaken for something alive, a small bird hard to identify, what falls from what flies.
