"Language Barrier" by Una Zelić, from How to Heal A Scar
My Spanish profesora teaches me to speak
the Spanish language she told me
I would master I would get a
five-out-of-five with the control of
syntax I have none in
my home language I fail
to pitch deep enough in my throat
for my deaf didi to hear me
telling him I cannot eat anymore
of my words for exact portions
of which I have deprived myself learning
the language of yearning to be less
than what I have ever been when
I learned the language of scales
lines and dots on a page blowing
all those miles away and between us
can be bridged with the
language of hands in my hair
when I had the idea that
I was a weed grown from the wall
over which I climb on mornings
where no how did you sleep
could keep me from letting
my words run so far away.
